Neglect

WHAT IS NEGLECT?

“The persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the impairment of the child’s health or development. Neglect may occur during pregnancy as a result of maternal substance abuse.”

Neglect erodes the child’s resilience. It makes a child or young person lack worth.

If you are concerned about the welfare of a child/ren in relation to Neglect or any other Child Protection concerns please contact the Children Assessment and Safeguarding Service, Local Authority Children Services Department on: 01472 326292 or the NSPCC Helpline: 0808 800 5000.

ARE YOU WORRIED THAT A CHILD'S BASIC NEEDS ARE NOT BEING MET?

For example:

  • Are they attending school on a regular basis?
  • Are they attending health appointments?
  • Do they appear to be hungry?
  • Are they dressed appropriately for the weather?
  • Are they protected from harm by their parent or carer?
  • Do they have a stable home environment?
  • Are they exposed to domestic violence?
  • Are they exposed to alcohol or drugs?
  • Does parent/carer have mental health issues?

These are just a few examples of issues and behaviours that may lead to a child becoming neglected. If you are concerned about a child or family there is support available.
